Lumigan (Bimatoprost)

Lumigan (Bimatoprost) is a medication used to treat high pressure inside the eye including glaucoma.

How does it work?

Lumigan is an antiglaucoma drug. It has the property of reducing IOP when applied topically.

The main active ingredient of the drug is bimatoprost – a substance that is able to reduce intraocular pressure.

Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide, a prostaglandin. It helps to increase the outflow of intraocular fluid through the trabecular nasal mucous canals and other parts of the eye.

The effect of the medicine is observed after 4 hours. The effect lasts for 24 hours.

When is Lumigan used?

This ophthalmic solution is used to treat:

  • Increased intraocular pressure (IOP);
  • Chronic open-angle glaucoma);
  • Glaucoma due to lens removal.

How to use Lumigan?

Use these eye drops only as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dose of bimatoprost is 1 drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, in the evening. It is not recommended to increase the dosage because this will worsen the outflow of intraocular fluid. Follow all directions given to you by your doctor carefully. The medicine can be used for a long time.

The patient with glaucoma should remember that it is necessary to monitor intraocular pressure regularly.

If you are using other ophthalmic drugs, then apply them with an interval of at least 5 minutes.

Lumigan vs Latanoprost

Lumigan (bimatoprost) is an effective first-line treatment for glaucoma. Xalatan (Latanoprost) lowers high pressure in the eye well and helps prevent glaucoma. Xalatan is a cheaper option.

Both drugs lower eye pressure and both are available as generics. Both drugs are used once a day.

Downsides: Lumigan can permanently change the color of your eyes and eyelids, darken and increase the length, thickness, and number of eyelashes, while Xalatan can turn the colored part of your eye and your eyelashes brown.

Side effects

Usually, bimatoprost is well tolerated. In rare cases, it can cause some side effects:

  • conjunctival hyperemia, speckled keratitis, irritation of the eye mucous membrane, itching, increased eyelash growth, asthenopia, visual impairment, impaired conjunctival function, conjunctival edema, iris hyperpigmentation, eyelash or eyebrow loss;
  • angioedema, allergic urticaria, rash, itching, anaphylactic reactions, facial edema, redness;
  • hair growth on the skin (if contact occurs);
  • eyelid redness, yelid itching, skin hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, dry skin, crust formation at the eyelid edge, eyelid edema, itching-syncope, cerebral circulation disorders, cerebral ischemia, myasthenia gravis, dizziness, paresthesias and headaches, migraines.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to bimatoprost;
  • Age under 18 years old.

Precautions

Exercise caution when using bimatoprost eye drops in the following cases:

  • risk factors for macular edema (aphakia, pseudophakia and rupture of the posterior lens capsule);
  • a history of severe eye infections (eg. caused by herpes simplex virus) or iritis / uveitis;
  • pregnancy (only for serious indications).

Breastfeeding should be suspended during treatment

An overdose of bimatoprost usually does not cause any bad side effects due to its low toxicity. Overdose treatment is symptomatic.

Interactions

Special studies of bimatoprost interaction with other drugs have not been conducted. Interactions in the human body are not expected since systemic concentrations of bimatoprost are extremely low after topical application of the drug in ophthalmology. In clinical trials, bimatoprost was used in conjunction with several different beta-blockers, but no interactions were observed. The simultaneous use of bimatoprost and other antiglaucoma drugs, except for ophthalmic beta-blockers, has not been studied in the course of studies of the efficacy and safety of combination therapy. A decrease in the hypotensive effect of bimatoprost was noticed when it was used together with other prostaglandin analogues in the treatment of ophthalmic hypertension or glaucoma.

How to store this medicine?

This ophthalmic solution is able to retain its medicinal properties for 2 years from the manufacture date indicated on the package.

Keep out of the reach of children. Storage temperature should not exceed 30° C (86° F).

After opening the dropper bottle, the drug retains its properties for 4 weeks.
