Bimatoprost 0.03% (Bimatoprost)
Bimatoprost 0.03% is a synthetic prostamide and structural prostaglandin analogue with ocular hypotensive activity.
What is it used for?
The drug is indicated for the reduction of increased intraocular pressure in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma and intraocular hypertension (as monotherapy or additional therapy to beta-blockers).
How does Bimatoprost 0.03% work?
Bimatoprost is an antiglaucoma and miotic agent.
The active ingredient is a synthetic prostamide, structurally related to prostaglandin F2α, which does not act via known prostaglandin receptors. The drug selectively mimics the activity of prostamides. Under its influence, the intraocular pressure decreases by increasing the outflow of moisture.
This effect is carried out with the help of the trabecular network and an increase in the uveoscleral outflow. A decrease in pressure inside the eyes can be observed as early as 4 hours after the first application. The maximum effect is observed after 8-12 hours and lasts for at least 24 hours.
Contraindications
Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or to one of the auxiliary components. The drug is also contraindicated for use in pregnant women (used only under strict indications). If you need to use this medicine during breastfeeding, you should stop lactation.
The drug is not used in pediatrics.
The drug should be used with caution in patients with risk factors for macular edema (patients with aphakia, pseudophakia, and rupture of the posterior lens capsule).
The hypotensive effect of the medicine is reduced when it is used together with other prostaglandin analogues in the treatment of ophthalmic hypertension or glaucoma.
How to use Bimatoprost 0.03%?
The recommended dose is 1 drop in the affected eye 1 time per day, in the evening. The dose should not be exceeded since more frequent use of this medicine can reduce its efficiency.
Is Bimatoprost the same as Latisse?
Latisse is the same as Bimatoprost, providing they are both the same concentration. Latisse is Allergan’s eye drops for glaucoma, which reduces IOP but also happens to grow lashes. Both products are also known as bimatoprost ophthalmic solution. In 2009, Allergan introduced Latisse as a lash enhancer.
